Iron Infusion

Overview

An iron infusion is a procedure where a medication is delivered directly into a vein in your arm. We administer all iron infusions by diluting the medication into a saline solution and administer it with an Infusion pump.

At Highgate Health as also are happy to provide Iron Infusions for children and pregnancy.

Things you need to bring

  1. The Medication from the pharmacy. Cost to you with Medicare is $30 without a valid Medicare card this is approximately $300. If you do not have a prescription from your GP or specialist, please make an appointment with one of our Nurse practitioners for a prescription.

How to prepare for an iron infusion

Your doctor will give you specific instructions for preparing for your first iron infusion treatment. Some basic things you can do to prepare on the day of your infusion include:

  • eat your breakfast and lunch, as there is no need to fast for an iron infusion.

  • be well hydrated.

  • wear comfortable / loose clothes.

  • take your regular medications.

  • be prepared to have a small needle put in your arm or hand.

  • know who to call for help during your infusion in case you have an adverse reaction.

You may feel nervous about your iron infusion. You can help reduce any anxieties by talking about the procedure with your doctor first. They can recommend ways to help you stay comfortable and relaxed during the procedure.
