An iron infusion is a medical procedure in which iron is delivered directly into a vein in your arm. At Highgate Health, we carefully administer all iron infusions by diluting the iron medication into a saline solution and using an infusion pump for precise delivery.

We are pleased to offer iron infusions for pregnant women and children.

Requirements for Iron Infusions at Highgate Health:

Recent blood test results (within the last three months)
A referral is not necessary.

*This may vary depending on you if you are entiled to Medicare PBS. Standard PBS is $31.60. The cost of the iron without PBS is +$320

Preparing for Your Iron Infusion

Your doctor will provide specific instructions for preparing for your iron infusion. Generally, on the day of your appointment, you should:

• Eat normally; fasting is not required.
  Make sure you are warm and well-hydrated.
  Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.
  Continue taking your regular medications.
  Be prepared for a small needle insertion in your arm or hand.
  Have your next of kin details available in case of an adverse reaction

While iron infusions are generally safe, some side effects may occur:

Common (1 in 10):

Headache, dizziness, flushing, hypertension (high blood pressure), nausea, injection site reactions.

Uncommon (1 in 100):

Abdominal pain, vomiting, cramps, dyspnoea (breathing difficulties), arthralgia (joint pain), numbness, itching, rash, chest pain, diarrhoea, dizziness, fatigue, hypotension (low blood pressure), myalgia (muscle pain).

Rare (1 in 10,000):

Angioedema (swelling under the skin), reduced consciousness (drowsiness), anxiety, bronchospasm (narrowed airways).
